Day trips from Funchal by bus: routes and return plans

Start with the destination, then secure the return. We recommend a route as direct only when SIGA’s current page clearly names the Funchal connection.

Choose the right trip

Destination Best for Route Evidence
Curral das Freiras A mountain-valley village with the simplest route choice of these trips. 181 Direct route listed by SIGA
Santana A bus-first visit to the north-coast town rather than its remote trailheads. 801 Direct route listed by SIGA
Machico or Baía D’Abra East-coast planning when you can verify the exact through-service. 702 Verify the through-service

How each option works

Route 181 · Direct route listed by SIGA

Curral das Freiras

Use route 181. SIGA currently names it Funchal – Curral das Freiras and publishes outward and return services on the official timetable page.

Before you rely on it

The route serves several parts of the valley. Match the stop to what you want to visit, and choose the return before leaving Funchal.

Route 801 · Direct route listed by SIGA

Santana

Use route 801. SIGA’s current Santana page lists 801 specifically as Funchal / Santana, separately from the shorter local services shown alongside it.

Before you rely on it

The route reaches Santana town, not every attraction across the municipality. Plan any onward leg separately and keep the official return in view.

Route 702 · Verify the through-service

Machico or Baía D’Abra

Check route 702 with care. Its SIGA-linked sheet shows Funchal, Machico, Caniçal and Baía D’Abra columns, but SIGA’s current page heading is Caniçal – Baía D’Abra and the sheet retains 2024 period notes.

Before you rely on it

Confirm with SIGA or the operator that your chosen trip runs through from Funchal. Not every listed journey reaches Baía D’Abra; plan trail conditions and the return separately.

West coast: bus day or tour?

For an independent bus day, choose Porto Moniz or Seixal as the main destination. Visiting both and adding Fanal needs a separate transport plan; passing a place on a bus is not the same as having time to visit it.

Fanal

Fanal: no regular SIGA connection to the forest is verified in our route and stop data. A bus to Porto Moniz or Seixal does not complete the trip to Fanal; arrange onward transport and pickup.

Using the bus for only one leg

You can plan a bus outward and a prearranged taxi or tour transfer back, or the reverse. Agree the pickup place before travelling. For a bus-only return, read the correct day category and notes for the exact boarding point; an outward trip alone does not establish a workable day trip.

When a tour fits better

Consider a west-island tour if your priority is combining Porto Moniz, Seixal and Fanal rather than spending the day in one place. Check the advertised stops, pickup area and time allowed at each stop before booking.

Plan the return first

  1. Open the SIGA timetable and select the correct day category.
  2. Choose an outward and return journey together; read every note attached to those trips.
  3. Check the official page again shortly before travel because SIGA can replace a timetable.

Choose the correct fare zone

These trips leave Funchal for another municipality, so use an intermunicipal product rather than a municipal-only one. The right ticket depends on how many journeys you will make and where you buy it; check the current fare guide instead of assuming a route-specific price.
